AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF THE DEMAND FOR WHOLESALE PORK PRIMALS: SEASONALITY AND STRUCTURAL CHANGE AgEcon
Parcell, Joseph L..
A set of inverse wholesale pork primal demand models were estimated to estimate wholesale pork primal own-quantity flexibility's, to determine seasonal price fluctuations, and to examine whether the flexibility's have changed in absolute magnitude over time. Results of this analysis indicate that there is the own-quantity flexibility for some primals differences by season with in the year. Additionally, it was determined that the own-quantity flexibility increased in magnitude (absolute value) over time for some of the primal cuts evaluated here. However, for Hams and Boston Butt the own-flexibility was either unchanged or increased over the period analyzed. Increased cold storage stocks for these primals may have been used to offset the price decline of...

AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION OF LIVE HOG DEMAND AgEcon
Parcell, Joseph L.; Mintert, James R.; Plain, Ronald L..
An inverse live hog demand model was estimated to analyze claims that the live hog own quantity demand flexibility's magnitude has increased in recent years. A second objective of this research was to estimate the impact changes in processing capacity utilization rates have on live hog prices. Iowa - Southern Minnesota barrow and gilt price was modeled as a function of average daily hog slaughter, a processing capacity utilization ratio, an index of processing and marketing costs, a retail demand shift index, pork cold storage stocks, and monthly binary variables. Results indicate that in recent years live hog prices have become more responsive to changes in hog slaughter. Additionally, changes in processing capacity utilization rates, at times, also have...

Assessing the Impacts of Low Carbohydrate Related Health Information on the Market Demand for US Vegetables AgEcon
Paudel, Laxmi; Adhikari, Murali; Houston, Jack E..
An Almost Ideal Demand System was estimated to examine the impacts of low carbohydrate information on the market demand for US vegetables. Analysis was extended to examine the performance of alternative carbohydrate information indexes. Study shows significant robust impacts of low carbohydrate information across all included vegetables. Results favor the general and weighted carbohydrate information index.

Entwicklungspotenziale für Forstbetriebsgemeinschaften - Ergebnisse einer institutionsökonomischen Analyse AgEcon
Harsche, Johannes; Jaensch, Kerstin; Krokel, Karin.

MARKET INTEGRATION: CASE STUDIES OF STRUCTURAL CHANGE AgEcon
Franken, Jason R.V.; Parcell, Joseph L..
The grain/oilseed industry is undergoing considerable structural change in the form of mergers and the addition of new processing facilities to add value beyond commodity grade. The rapid structural changes in this industry call into question the relevance of previous research conducted in these areas. Focusing on two structural change events in northeast Missouri as case studies provides an incisive glimpse at the larger impact of structural change on the grain/oilseed industry. This study addresses the merger of Archer Daniels Midland and Quincy Grain, and the opening of a producer-owned ethanol plant in northeast Missouri to determine if these structural change events altered pricing patterns and linkages in Missouri grain/oilseed markets, and assess...

Modeling Succession on Irish Dairy Farms AgEcon
Hennessy, Thia C..
This paper examines intergenerational succession on Irish dairy farms. The factors that influence the decision to enter dairying farming are examined using a binary choice logit model. Reasons that are frequently published in the popular farming press as being an obstacle to intergenerational succession are analysed and the significance of their effect is quantified. Results show that the level of education of the heir is the most significant factor in the succession decision. Heir's with third level education are 30% less likely to enter dairy farming than their second level only educated counterparts. The sizes of milk quota and income that are associated with high probabilities of succession are identified.

SCENAR2020: Future of European Agriculture under Different Policy Options, the economic modelling framework AgEcon
Banse, Martin; Helming, John F.M.; van Meijl, Hans; Nowicki, Peter.
This paper identifies major future trends and driving factors and perspectives and challenges resulting from them for European agriculture and food sectors until the year 2020. The focus of the paper is an analysis of key driving forces and the provision of a well developed reference scenario under the assumption of continued CAP reform and taking into account the framework discussions in the Doha Development Round. To assess the impact of policies the paper also examines a liberalisation (no support) and regionalisation (max support) scenario. In terms of policy options the paper shows that structural change process in agriculture is a long-term process that continues with or without policy changes. EU is facing an increasing diversity of structure and...

Structural Change in the Dairy Sectors of Germany and The Netherlands - A Markov Chain Analysis AgEcon
Huettel, Silke; Jongeneel, Roelof A..
With the milk quota announced to be abolished in the future, the dairy sector is going to face a significant policy regime shift. This paper sets out to analyze the impact of milk quotas on the dairy farm structure of two important milk producing member states: Germany and the Netherlands. Based on proper behavioral assumptions, non stationary Markov chain models are specified and estimated using a generalized cross entropy procedure, which takes into account both sample and prior information. Moreover four mobility indicators characterizing structural change are developed and calculated. Structural change in the dairy sector as measured by the mobility measures is faster in West Germany than in the Netherlands. However, in the transition region East...
